white House Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders acknowledged on Thursday that President Donald Trump believes that interference in the 2016 U.S. election was “probably” caused by Russia.
During a White House press conference on Thursday that the media was banned from airing live, Sanders was asked to clarify if the president accepts the intelligence community’s conclusion that Russia was responsible for hacking the Democratic National Committee.
“Why does he continue to dispute that finding and call the hack a hoax?” one reporter wondered.
Sanders pointed to a statement that the president made in February: “I think it was Russia but I also think we get hacked by other countries and other people.”
“I think he’s made it clear and been consistent that while everyone agrees that the result of the election wasn’t influenced, he thinks that it probably was Russia,” she insisted.
The deputy press secretary was also pressed on Trump’s refusal to accept basic facts like the popular vote tallies, which he lost by millions of votes.
“You won’t tell us where he stands on climate science,” the reporter added. “Why does the president choose to accept certain facts but dispute and reject others?”
“I’m not aware that he accepts certain facts,” Sanders replied. “I think we accept all the facts. Look, the president won the election. I don’t know why we have to continue debating this.”
